Week 12 Football Picks: Braves, Seahawks set to advance

If you’re looking for a game to put Socastee on upset alert, tonight’s playoff contest against visiting Berkeley might be it.

Starting quartrerback Hunter Renfrow missed the first two days of practice due to illness, the Braves (11-0) are playing to surpass their deepest playoff run in school history and no one is giving the Stags (5-6) a shot.

Now erase those negative thoughts from your mind when you see the big picture. Renfrow has run the option so many times he could do it in his sleep, the Socastee defense is holding its own and these aren’t your usual Braves.

It will be interesting to see how Socastee reacts to the games getting progressively closer in the playoffs. Socastee has won all but one of its games by double digits. But this won’t be one of them. … Socastee 31, Berkeley 13.

* Myrtle Beach at Hanahan: The seeding say the Seahawks are the underdog in this second-round showdown, but the eye test says otherwise. This is where Myrtle Beach’s tough early schedule starts to pay off.

In addition to facing a tougher schedule than the Hawks (10-1), the Seahawks (10-1) have all their players healthy for the first time this season. With Chocolate Wilson in the secondary and linebackers OT Thomas and Sean Michael Orcutt at 100 percent, the defense is allowing fewer than 6 points per game over the past month.

The offense also is back in the swing of things, scoring 98 total points the past two weeks. Hanahan’s nine-game winning streak comes to an end tonight. … Myrtle Beach 27, Hanahan 17.

* Conway at Goose Creek: History will show that the Tigers (5-6) actually lost their first-round playoff game last week when they were upset by region rival Carolina Forest in triple overtime.

That defeat dropped Conway from the region champion and a first-round home playoff game. Instead the Tigers fell to the No. 16 overall seed, forcing a trip to a place where no one wants to play – at the top-seeded Gators.

The Tigers expect Mykal Moody back in the lineup after sitting out last week’s game with a thigh bruise, but even he won’t be able to help the Tigers get past the nationally ranked Gators. … Goose Creek 42, Conway 20.
