No.1 seed High Point falls to Big South killer Winthrop

High-PointThe first #1 seed of NCAA tournament season has fallen at the HTC Center on the campus of Coastal Carolina University. With a last second floater from the right wing, Winthrop’s Andre Smith drained a three pointer to advance #4 South seed Winthrop into the Semifinal Round.

Winthrop’s 62-60 win over High Point University seemed destined for a team that has defeated High Point in every post season match-up during their 14 year history.

Winthrop is the most successful team in Big South Championship history with 10 titles, but it’s been 4 years since the Eagles have hoisted the trophy.

Winthrop moves to 19-12 on the season and advances to face  UNC Asheville. The semifinals will be held tomorrow at noon inside the HTC Center.

UNC Asheville 96, Radford 87 –  Jaron Lane scored 24 of his season-high 29 points in the second half and UNC Asheville defeated Radford 96-87 Friday in the quarterfinals of the VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Conference Championship at The HTC Center.

Asheville (17-14) advances to Saturday’s 12:00 p.m. semifinal against Winthrop on ESPN3, the fourth seed from the South Division, which defeated the North’s top seed High Point 62-60 earlier Friday.

VMI 90, Gardner-Webb 77 – No. 2 North seed VMI’s All-Big South trio of D.J. Covington, Rodney Glasgow and QJ Peterson combined for 60 points, helping the Keydets take down No. 3 South seed Gardner-Webb, 90-77, in Friday’s fourth and final VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Men’s Basketball Championship quarterfinal contest at The HTC Center.

The game lacked the drama of VMI’s 108-104 four-overtime win at Gardner-Webb on Feb. 5, but the outcome was the same. VMI (19-11) advances to the Big South Championship semifinals for the fourth straight season, and the Keydets will match up against the tournament host, No. 1 South seed Coastal Carolina (19-12), Saturday at 2 p.m. on ESPN3.
