Local surfer Richards gets third in GromSearch finals

Garden City’s Cam Richards picked up a 3rd place finish today in the Rip Curl International GromSearch competition head at Bells Beach, Australia. The event, which coincides with the Rip Cul Pro won yesterday by Mick Fanning, pits winners from around the world in a 3 round event.

Richards qualified to represent North America by winning the GromSearch event held on November 4th, 2011 at Ocean Beach near San Francisco.

The 12th annual GromSearch event narrows 2000 participants down to 8 International winners age 16 and under, battling it out through 3 rounds in overhead slightly choppy surf.

Richards’ opening round  on Monday saw him placing 5th and forcing him to surf rounds 2 and 3 while the opening round winners moved straight to the finals.

After starting out the second round with a low scoring wave, Richards decided to move up the right breaking point to Rincon, producing a longer ride for the goofy footed surfer, surfing on his backhand. Richards then put up a 7.17, followed by a 6.67 for a best two wave total 13.84 moving him into 2nd place and round 3 behind Tommy Boucuat, from Australia. Boucaut would finish with a two wave total of 16.56.

Round 3 began just a few minutes later, with Richards quickly moving into 2nd place in the 4 man heat. Picking up a couple of low scoring waves, Richards then posted a 4 point wave for a combined 4.5. Following up with 2.60, Richards increased his two wave score to 6.60. That wouldn’t be enough as Sean Kettles, and Miguel Blanco moved ahead, leaving Richards needing a 4.71 to move back into 2nd place. Picking up a wave with just under a minute to go, Richards would post a 6.13 score on that final wave of the heat and move on to the finals of the event.

The finals featured surfers from Brazil, Australia, South Africa and the United States.
Richards came out early with a 5.17 wave, followed by a 4.23 point ride for a 2 wave total of 9.40, well short of Brazil’s Filipe Toledo’s 14.73. Richards would answer back with  7.83 point wave ridden all the wave to the beach, but it wouldn’t be enough.

Dylan Lightfoot would win the event with a combined wave score of 16.93, followed by Filipe Toledo’s  16.06 to Cam Richards 13.00 point combined score.
