CCU soccer’s Hedrick earns Big South defensive honor

Coastal Carolina men’s soccer defender Cyprian Hedrick was named Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Week for games played Sept. 19-25, the league announced today.

Hedrick, a senior from Friendwood, Texas, led a Chanticleer defense that allowed just three shots on goal as the 24th- ranked Coastal Carolina downed Gardner-Webb, 3-1, in its Big South opener Sept. 23 at the CCU Soccer Field. Coming off a win over a ranked Virginia Commonwealth team, the Runnin’ Bulldogs entered the match averaging 14.14 shots per game.

In addition to his stellar defense Hedrick scored his first goal of the year against Gardner-Webb on a diving header to give the Chants an early 1-0 advantage, marking his second goal of his career. Of the 733 minutes played by Coastal, Hedrick has played a team-high 730 minutes, leading the Chants defense that has only yielded 0.86 goals per game, including three ranked opponents that are averaging 1.92 goals a game.

Hedrick becomes the third Chant to earn the Big South weekly honor. He joins goalkepper Scott Angevine(Sept. 13) and forward Ashton Bennett, who earned Attacker of the week honor on Sept. 7. Also, Hedrick and Bennett have both earned National Team of the Week honors by TopDrawerSoccer.com.

Coastal returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 28 as they play host to UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m. at the CCU Soccer Field.
