Connor Shaw has been announced as South Carolina’s starting quarterback for Saturday’s game against Kentucky, replacing incumbent Stephen Garcia.
Shaw, a sophomore, played the first quarter of the season opener against East Carolina but was taken out in favor of Garcia with his team down 17-0. He has seen limited action since.
Garcia, a fifth-year senior, helped rally the Gamecocks to a 56-37 win over East Carolina in the opener. But he has completed just 51 percent of his passes with four touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Coach Steve Spurrier cited Shaw’s readiness and Garcia’s inconsistencies as factors in the change.
Garcia threw for 3,059 yards and 20 touchdowns last season.
