Time to make a little Mammy’s Kitchen Athlete of the Week Award history this week with our first nominee from a non-scholastic sport.
Surfer Cam Richards, who attends St. James High, earned a nomination with another remarkable performance. But he faces two other deserving athletes – Socastee cross-country runner T.J. Lazaroff and Myrtle Beach volleyball Meagan Milligan – for the title.
Here’s the 4-1-1 on this week’s candidates:
* T.J. Lazaroff, Socastee, Cross Country: Senior finished 15th individually with a time of 17:03 in the Class AAA State Championships in Columbia to earn all-state honors, and he led the Braves to a program-record fifth-place showing in the team standings.
* Meagan Milligan, Myrtle Beach, Volleyball: After being named the Region VIII-AAA Player of the Year, the junior middle hitter led the Lady Seahawks to their first Class AAA State Championship appearance with a total of 42 kills in their final three playoff games.
* Cam Richards, St. James, Surfing: Already the reigning 16 and under national champion, Richards won the Rip Curl Pro National GromSearch at Ocean Beach in San Francisco last week to earn a trip to Australia next year for the International GromSearch finals.
