Riberio honored, No. 9 CCU heads to Big South tourney

No. 9 Coastal Carolina midfielder Pedro Ribeiro was named Big South Attacking Player of the Week for games played Oct. 31-Nov. 6, the league announced today.

Ribeiro, a sophomore from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, netted three goals and a pair of assists to lead the ninth-ranked Chanticleers to a 2-0 record last week and the No. 1 seed in this week’s Big South Tournament.

Ribeiro assisted on the game-winning goal scored by Ashton Bennett in the 24th minute against Presbyterian College Nov. 2. He later scored the third goal for the Chanticleers in the 31st minute of the 3-0 victory.

In Saturday’s regular season final he scored the equalizer with forty-two seconds remaining in the first half against Campbell. Bennett added two goals in the second half with Ribeiro assisting on the second one. He scored his second goal of the afternoon in the 67th minute on a bicycle kick to put the Chants up 4-1.

This marks Ribeiro’s first Big South Award of the season and the eighth for Coastal Carolina. He was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National team of the Week Oct. 17.

Coastal will be competing in the Big South Tournament in Boiling Springs, N.C., beginning Thursday, Nov. 10, at 2:30 against UNC Asheville. The Chanticleers enter the match as the #1 seed and are currently riding a 12-game winning streak stretching back to Sept. 18.
