The Myrtle Beach High boys basketball didn’t have to wait until the football state championship to put a full hoops team on the floor Tuesday night.
After the football team fell short of its third straight trip to the Class AAA state title game, the basketball Seahawks got their full compliment of players in November for the first time since the 2008-09 season.
The extra work and help showed on the basketball floor against host Lake City, with five Myrtle Beach players scoring in double-figures and sticking together to win a tight 70-68 road decision over the Panthers (0-1) in the season opener for both teams.
Emaray Johnson scored 17 points for the Seahawks, Solomon Cooper tallied 13 points and Eric Goings added 11.
Football players who switched from the gridiron to the hardwood after last week’s loss to Bluffton in the third round of the Class AAA playoffs also had nice night, including T.J. Jones’ 12 points, Tramond Wilson’s 10 points and Daquarius Wilson’s six points.
The Seahawks (1-0), who were banned from postseason play last year due to unapproved team practices, are off to a good start in the 2011-12 season with the win. Myrtle Beach travels to Mullins on Thursday.
