Bennett, 5 local seniors go out on tough day for South

It was a bad for the South in South Carolina on Saturday in a pair of all-star football contests.

The North defeated the South, which was coached by former Coastal Carolina coach David Bennett, 7-3 in Saturday’s FCS Senior Scout Bowl at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.

And in the 75th annual Shrine Bowl in Spartanburg, the North Carolina high school all-stars rallied in the second half for a 26-19 victory over South Carolina at Wofford Stadium.

Coastal had three players on the South roster – tight end Jamie Childers and offensive linemen Tim Franklin and Bryan Brooks. Because of the short, three-day preparation time both teams had, neither offense was able to get anything going.

The Shrine Bowl had two players and another longtime coach from the Grand Strand. Conway coach Chuck Jordan led the Sandlappers against the Tar Heels while Conway’s Robert Nelson and Myrtle Beach’s Daquarius Wilson suited up for the South.

South Carolina led 13-6 at halftime but the North Carolina squad rallied for 20 unanswered points en route to the victory. The South still leads the all-time series 41-30-4.
