The St. James boys basketball team remained winless on the season with a 53-52 defeat to Waccamaw on Friday, but the Sharks will remember this loss as the win that got away.
Leading 52-49 in the final minute, the Sharks gave up a layup, then committed back-to-back fouls on the Warriors’ final possession. Waccamaw hit a pair of free throws and St. James failed to score at the buzzer for a one-point defeat.
The Sharks (0-3) got a game-high 23 points from Caleb Duggan following his 33-point performance earlier this week against Socastee. St. James’ Matt Strange scored 13 points and J.C. Calvin added 12.
The Warriors got a team-high 15 points from Dejaun Frazier and Trevor Newbauer added 12.
St. James travels to South Florence on Saturday.
* Girls: The Lady Sharks improved to 3-0 on the season with an easy 54-18 victory over visiting Waccamaw on Friday night.
St. James’ Stephanie Roberts recorded a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds, both game-highs, to lead the Lady Sharks. Monica Smalls added 10 points.
The Lady Sharks will try to keep their perfect season intact Saturday night when they visit South Florence.
