Socastee blows out Saints

The Socastee boys basketball team proved there’s still a great divide between public and private schools in South Carolina.

The Braves (3-0), coming off a ho-hum 10-10 season, blew out three-time defending SCISA state champion Myrtle Beach Christian Academy 88-43 on Tuesday night at “The Wave.”

Socastee’s Travis Frye scored a game-high 21 points and Matthew Scalise added 12 points as the Braves broke out to a 30-6 lead in the first quarter.

The Saints (2-1), who have built a private-school powerhouse in boys basketball, were clearly outclassed as Socastee took a 48-13 lead at halftime and called off the dogs in the second half. The Barves had a total of 10 players score in the contest.

Myrtle Beach Christian’s Kendall Henry, who came into the game averaging 24 points per game, was held to just nine points on Tuesday, as was teammate Alex Morris.

Socastee returns to action Saturday night when intra-county rival Carolina Forest comes to The Wave.
