Coastal men’s golf tied for 4th at Sea Best Invitational

The Coastal Carolina men’s golf team opened its 2012 spring season carding a two-round score of 609 (315-294) to tie for fourth at the Jacksonville University Sea Best Invitational, played at the PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass.

Florida leads the 13-team field, shooting an 11-over par 587 (303-284), followed by Liberty (598) and North Florida (605). Old Dominion also carded a 609 to tie the Chanticleers for fourth.

Junior Sebastian Soderberg leads the Chants through 36 holes, tying for eighth with a two-round score of four-over 148 (75-73). Soderberg birdied the famous island green on the 126-yard, par 3 17th hole. He played the eight par fives in five-under par, the second best tally on the day. Soderberg also posted eight birdies, the second-best total over 36 holes.

Kevin Vanden Heuvel led Coastal, shooting four-over par on the 20 par fours to rank 10th among the 60-player field. The sophomore is tied for 18th, carding a seven-over 151. He struggled to shoot 81 in the first round, but rallied to shoot a career-low 70 in the afternoon session, thanks to five birdies including one on the island hole.

Andrew Dorn and Roberto Ballesteros turned in scores of 11-over and 12-over par, respectively, and stand in 33rd and 36th place. Dorn opened with a 79 and closed Monday with a 76 for a 155. Ballesteros matched Vanden Heuval’s opening round 81 and bounced back to shoot three-over 75 in round two for a 156. Charlie Winegardner is tied for 46th after firing 80-79 for a 159. Despite the scores, the senior ranked second in the field in par three scoring (one-under par) and posted the second-best total number of pars with 23.

The two-day event will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday.
