Grissett’s late basket gives Chiefs first region victory

Jaquan Grissett drove to the left and connected on a 12-foot jumper with 13 seconds remaining to give the North Myrtle Beach Chiefs a 52-51 Region VIII-AAA victory over Georgetown.

Grissett’s jumper saved the Chiefs (9-5 overall, 1-2 region) after North Myrtle Beach saw a six-point lead with 3:39 left to play in regulation erased by the Bulldogs.

Georgetown’s AJ Walker drove to the basket for a layup to give the Bulldogs a 51-50 lead with 52 seconds to play.  That was the first lead for the Bulldogs since late in the second quarter, but it was short lived.

Following Walker’s basket, Grissett missed a jumper with 39 seconds to play.  Walker pulled down the rebound on Grissett’s miss but Daequan Gibson turned the ball over with 30 seconds to play to give the Chiefs a chance.

After Grissett’s go-ahead basket and a Georgetown timeout, the Bulldogs fed the ball into the low post to Charlie McGirt. But the Chiefs double teamed McGirt and held on for their first region victory of the season.

The game-winner gave Grissett a game-high 21 points and teammate Matt Lindsay scored 13 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Walker had a double-double for the Bulldogs, scoring 19 points and grabbing 12 boards.

The Chiefs take on rival Myrtle Beach on Friday.
