CCU’s Hayden, Quolas take Big South softball awards

Coastal Carolina ’s Kory Hayden has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Softball Player of the Week, while fellow teammate Kiana Quolas was selected as The Crons Brand Pitcher of the Week for games played Feb. 13-19.

Hayden recorded a .429 batting average with a .500 on-base percentage, three home runs and six RBI to help Coastal Carolina to a 3-2 record at the Florida State Tournament. The freshman posted a 1.143 slugging percentage on the weekend and recorded six hits in 14 at bats, while she was also walked twice. Defensively, Hayden had 13 total assists and six put outs in the Chanticleers’ five games.

During the Chanticleers’ game against Mercer, Hayden recorded a home run in her second at bat to put the Chanticleers ahead 6-0 in the third inning. Hayden then hit a single in the sixth inning that drove in Brooke Donovan to give Coastal it’s final run of the game, as they went ahead 9-3.

Following Coastals’ game against Mercer, Coastal played North Dakota State and Hayden hit a three-run home run to left field in the first inning on a two-two count to give the Chants the 3-0 lead, Coastal went on to fall 8-3.

Hayden posted her third home run of the tournament the following day in the Chanticleers game against Florida State , as she knocked the ball out of left center to give Coastal it’s only run of the game.

Quolas posted a perfect 3-0 record last weekend at the Florida State Tournament after pitching 20 innings. The freshman helped Coastal to a 9-3 win over Mercer on Friday, Feb. 17, giving up six hits and three runs, while striking out one and walking one in six innings. Quolas then pitched a complete game the following day against Florida A&M, allowing just two hits and striking out seven in the 3-0 win for Coastal. During the final day of the tournament Quolas pitched another complete game, this time against North Dakota State . Quolas gave up seven hits and no walks, while tallying five strikeouts in the 4-2 victory over the Bison. Overall, Quolas posted a 1.80 ERA and the opponents’ batting average was .190.

Coastal hosts the Chanticleer Challenge this weekend at the Coastal Carolina University softball field. The Chants will play Temple on Friday, Feb. 24 at 3:30 p.m. and Sacred Heart at 5:30 p.m.
