The Coastal Carolina men’s golf team shot a 4-under 284 Saturday to move up four spots to fourth after two of three rounds at the Furman Intercollegiate, played at the 6,994-yard, par 72 Furman University Golf Course.
The event will conclude with 18 holes Sunday.
The Chanticleers were led by Sebastian Soderberg once again. The junior carded a 4-under 68 for the second consecutive day. His two-day 136 is one stroke off the individual lead.
Soderberg started his round in spectacular fashion, going par, birdie, eagle and he was 5-under at the turn thanks to birdies on holes six and seven. He would get to as low as 6-under after a birdie on 10, but bogeys on holes 12 and 13 – his first two of the event, brought Soderberg back to 4-under. A birdie on 15 would be offset by a bogey on 17 to give him his 68.
Clemson leads the 21-team field, shooting 290-276 for a 36-hole total of 566. Virginia Tech (572) and Georgia State (576) are just ahead of Coastal’s two-day total of 577 (293-284).
Freshman Peter Valasek shot an even par round of 72. He was up and down on the front nine, getting a double bogey, two bogeys, a birdie and an eagle to finish 1-over 37 at the turn. He birdied the par 4 10th hole to get back to even and reeled off eight straight pars to finish his even par round. He is tied for 41st (74-72=146).
Charlie Winegardner knocked seven strokes off his Friday round (77) to shoot 2-under 70 Saturday. He was 3-under on the outward nine and traded a bogey on hole 12 for a birdie on 13. However, bogeys on 14 and 17 got the senior to 1-under. but he rallied to birdie the par4 18 to get his 14th career round of par or better. He is tied for 50 with a two-day score of 147.
Freshman Ben Wheeler, who had five birdies on Saturday, carded a 2-over 74 for the second straight day, giving him a 36-hole score of 148 to tie for 57th. Andrew Dorn is tied for 115th, shooting 81-76 for a 157.
