The Chanticleers are 16-4 on the season heading into the Chanticleer Showdown that will take place from Friday through Sunday.
Sarah Maples put the Chanticleers on the board in the bottom of the first inning as she advanced home on a single by Kory Hayden to put the score at 1-0.
The Chanticleers only allowed one Explorers hit through the first three innings of play, while Coastal extended its lead to three in the bottom of the third inning. Jessie Winans advanced home on an error by La Salle after stealing second base during Maples at bat. Jazmin Daigle scored on a sacrifice fly by Hayden to make it a 3-0 game.
La Salle ’s best opportunity to score came in the seventh inning when Kristin Travers hit a double to right field. The Chanticleers defense held its ground during the remainder of the inning picking up three straight outs to take the game 3-0.
Kiana Quolas recorded two hits in three at bats and Maples posted two hits and one run in three at bats. Hayden finished the game with one hit and two RBI in one at bat. She was also walked once. Four Chanticleers posted four putouts in the game. Winans finished the game with four putouts and three assists.
Earning the win on the mound was Ashley Bagwell who pitched a complete game, striking out four, while allowing four hits in 24 batters faced.
Travers took the loss for the Explorers on the mound following four strikeouts, six hits and three walks in 26 batters faced.
Coastal Carolina returns to action on Friday, March 9 at 2:30 p.m. against North Carolina A&T in the Chanticleer Showdown. The Chanticleers play La Salle again on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
