Coastal Carolina freshman Ben Wheeler (South Croydon, England) has been selected the Choice Hotels Big South Men’s and Women’s Golfer of the Week, respectively, for events played March 29-April 4, it was announced today by the Conference office.
Wheeler carded a 4-under par 212 (75-66-71) at the Insperity Augusta State Invitational (par 72, 7,143 yards) to finish in a tie for 18th in the event that was ranked No. 13 of the 190 collegiate golf tournaments this season and featured 10 of the nation’s Top 50 programs. He established career-bests for lowest round (66), 36-hole score (141) and 54-hole score (212).
After opening with a 75, Wheeler posted a 6-under 66 in the second round to move from 52nd to 15th on the leaderboard, and became just the seventh Chanticleer ever to shoot 66 or better. With his performance, Wheeler vaulted to second on the team in scoring average (74.67) and he is now the highest-rated freshman in the Big South, according to Golfweek.
Coastal Carolina will conclude the regular season April 16-18 at the 2012 Big South Championships, held at the Patriot Golf Club in Ninety-Six.
