Frederick outlasts Pelicans, rain delay for 8-3 victory

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans fell to the Frederick Keys 8-3 on Tuesday at Pelicans Ballpark.

Myrtle Beach jumped out to the night’s first lead, scoring two runs in the first inning after the first three Pelicans singled.  Odubel Herrera, Jake Skole and Christian Villanueva all singled to score the first notch.  Tomas Telis grounded out to score the second.

The fun ended for Myrtle Beach, however, with the Keys going on an 8-1 run from that point on.  Frederick started when it scored a run in the second off Pelicans starter Roman Mendez.  A Kipp Shutz single followed by a Jeremy Nowak triple brought in the tally.

Frederick added three more runs in the third, headlined by a two-run singled from Jeremy Nowak.  Four more runs scored in the fourth on a solo homerun by Bobby Stevens, a two-run double from Aaron Baker and an RBI single from Nowak.

Myrtle Beach’s second run came in the third on a sacrifice fly from Yefry Castillo.

NEST NOTES:  The game was interrupted in the fourth inning by a 40 minute rain delay.  The stoppage forced Frederick starter Scott Copeland from the game after three innings.  Myrtle Beach used five different pitchers for the second time this season.  Pelicans centerfielder Jake Skole had the longest at-bat of the season for a Bird, seeing 14 pitches before succumbing to a strikeout in the seventh inning.

Myrtle Beach returns to action against Frederick Wednesday at 7:05.
