GSSC Roundup: Socastee third; MB, CF close with wins

While the Socastee boys were wrapping up the championship of the Mingo Bay Classic, the Lady Braves were adding some hardware to the school’s trophy case by taking third place in the Grand Strand Softball Classic.

Featuring teams from all over the Eastern U.S., the GSSC saw Socastee knock off Elmira (N.Y.) 6-1 in the consolation game of the championship bracket.

Socastee’s Blake Smith ripped a three-run homer in the first inning to get the Lady Braves off to a big start and starting pitcher Savannah Talley never wavered, pitching a complete-game three-hitter and striking out five.

* Myrtle Beach 6, Letcher (Ky.) 3: Cameron Crutchfield continued her red-hot hitting, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs scored to lead the Lady Seahawks to victory.

Myrtle Beach’s Morgan Compton also went 3-for-4 and starting pitcher Angel Hatzidakis hurled a one-hitter with nine strikeouts.

* Carolina Forest 14, Paul VI (N.Y.) 4: The Lady Panthers snapped their two-game losing streak with a dominating performance that ended in five innings via the mercy rule.

Marisa Runyon went 3-for-3 on the night with four RBIs on two doubles and a triple and Sara Sweatt went 3-for-4 with three RBIs on a double and a triple with three runs scored.

Rachel Lembcke improved to 5-0 on the season, throwing a four-hitter for the Lady Panthers (14-2).

* Brighton (N.Y.) 3, Conway 1: The Lady Tigers gave up three runs in the fifth inning and could only push one across the plate late to suffer the loss in the Grand Strand Softball Classic.
