Lady Tigers battle back to beat Sumter in ninth inning

The Conway High softball team rallied in extra innings to defeat Region VI-AAA rival Sumter 6-5 on Wednesday.

Conway’s Coker Edge delivered a deep single into the gap to score Ashlyn Hardwick for the walk-off victory, putting the Lady Tigers (6-6 overall, 3-4 region) in position for the third and final playoff spot.

The game was a see-saw affair in which the Lady Gamecocks break the 4-4 deadlock in the top of the ninth, but Conway’s Emma Cain scored on a bases-loaded walk to tie it up at 5 and set the stage for Edge’s heroics.

Coker saved her only hit of the night for the right time. Monica Wright led the Lady Tigers with a 3-for-4 night at the plate and Brandye Huggins went 2-for-4 to lead Conway’s offensive effort, while Breanna Van Deusen got the win on the mound.
