Seahawks clinch region title as MB girls sew up second

The Myrtle Beach boys and girls soccer teams clinched first-round playoff games Monday night by sweeping visiting Georgetown.

The Lady Seahawks sewed up second place in the region by virtue of their 8-0 win over the Lady Bulldogs, while Seahawks (17-2-1 overall, 8-0 region) clinched the Region VIII-AAA regular-season title by also shutting out the Bulldogs 6-0.

The Lady Seahawks (8-5, 6-3) didn’t realize it at the time, but their victory, coupled with Socastee’s 3-2 win over North Myrtle Beach, means they will open the playoffs next week at home against an opponent to be determined.

The Myrtle Beach girls looked to be in playoff form, jumping out to a 5-0 lead over Georgetown at halftime on a pair of goals by Summer Penny and one goal apiece by goals by Temperance Russell, Bailey Richard and Lindsey Springs.

Myrtle Beach’s Mackenzie Jones got into the scoring act to pen the second half with a 50-footer that found the top shelf of the back of the goal, then Penny capped her hat trick with a putback off the post. Tori Zeltner closed the scoring with a late goal.

The Myrtle Beach boys wasted even less time getting on the board, with Nolan Butler scoring just 45 seconds into the contest. Aristen Baku, Alex Vasquez and Max Huggins tacked on goal for a 4-0 halftime advantage as the Seahawks coasted to the region title.

Myrtle Beach play three games in as many days, hosting Wilson in a makeup match Tuesday and then closing out the season at rival North Myrtle Beach on Wednesday.
