Buckel picks up hardware hat trick as Pelicans return

It’s been a good week to be a Pelicans pitcher, and the staff picked up another honor Monday.

Starter Cody Buckel was named Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season, announced by Minor League Baseball Monday.  Buckel is the only pitcher to be named multiple times in 2012.

Buckel made one appearance this past week, tossing a career long eight inning Thursday at Winston-Salem.  The righty struck out a career best 11 while allowing only three hits and one walk.  Buckel took a no-decision with the game lasting 13 innings until the Pelicans took the win.

Buckel is 3-1 with a Carolina League leading 1.14 ERA and 59 strikeouts.  He fluctuates in and out of both the top five and top ten leaders in all of Minor League baseball in both categories.

It was one of many fantastic performances by Pelicans pitchers this week.  On Saturday Nick Tepesch went the first seven and one third innings of a combined no-hitter, the first nine-inning no-hitter in team history.  Jimmy Reyes finished the gem, pitching the final five outs of the minor’s sixth no-hitter this season.  Kyle Hendricks followed that up with eight innings of four hit, one run ball on Sunday.

Myrtle Beach returns home Tuesday, May 22nd, at 7:05pm against the Lynchburg Hillcats.
