CCU men’s relay team, Flanagan sweep weekly awards

Coastal Carolina men’s track and field student-athletes swept the weekly Big South athlete of the week awards as the shuttle hurdle relay team was named the Choice Hotels Men’s Track Athlete of the Week and Jason Flanagan earned his third Men’s Field Athlete of the Week plaudit, the league announced on Thursday.

The men’s shuttle hurdle relay foursome of Shane Norris, Tre’von Gee, Russel Kanner and Carrington Fernandors captured the Coastal Carolina all-time mark at the prestigious Penn Relays. The quartet finished the unique event, which features teammates running in opposite directions in adjacent lanes, in an impressive time of 59.50. The team’s time was good for a fourth-place finish.

Flanagan, who currently ranks 15th in the NCAA in the javelin, competed in arguably one of the toughest fields at The Penn Relays as he squared off with six other NCAA top 50 ranked individuals in the championship division of the men’s javelin throw. Competing in front of his family and friends, the Philadelphia native earned medalist honors with a third-place finish. Flanagan was fifth heading into the finals with a throw of 67.80m (222-05); however, the current Big South and Coastal Carolina record holder unleashed a throw of 71.34m (234-00) on his final throw of the day to claim third.

Up Next the Chanticleer distance competitors and throwers head to Durham, N.C., to take part in the Duke Twilight while the sprint, jump and hurdle group head to Big South member Winthrop for the Winthrop Twilight in Rock Hill. Both events are scheduled for Sunday and act as de facto final qualifiers for the NCAA East Preliminary Round, which starts on May 24 in Jacksonville, Fla.
