Lady Panthers rally in ninth to knock off White Knoll

The Carolina Forest softball team continued its refuse-to-lose motto Saturday by rallying in the ninth for a 5-4 victory over White Knoll in the first round of the Class AAAA Lower State tournament.

Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth, Sara Sweatt drove in Rachel Lembcke for the game-tying score and Marisa Runyon knocked in Sweatt for the game-winning, walk-off score.

It was the Lady Panthers’ (21-2) second comeback with their backs against the wall in the hard-fought contest. The Lady Timberwolves broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh, but Carolina Forest managed to score and force extra innings in the bottom of the frame.

Carolina Forest freshman pitcher Emily Merriam got the win as the Lady Panthers advance to the winners’ bracket of the Lower State tournament on Monday night at Summerville.
