The St. James boys golf team is in eighth place following Monday’s first round of the Class AAA state golf championships at Coastal Carolina University’s Hackler Course.
The Sharks shot a four-man total of 29-over-par 317 to stay within range of first-round leaders Chapin (298), Hilton Head (302) and AC Flora (302). The second round tees off at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The Sharks are within five strokes of fourth place, trailing Fort Mill and Travelers Rest at 312 and Nation Ford and Hartsville at 314.
Rounding out the second tier in the 16 -team field are Eastside (319), South Pointe (324) Daniel and Bluffton (325), Greenville (328), York (329), tournament-host North Myrtle Beach (330) and Midland Valley (343).
Chapin’s Will Starke is the runaway first-round leader after firing a 4-under 68, four strokes ahead of second-place Nick Andrews (72). Five players are tied for third at 73 and St. James’ Alan Crum (74) is tied for eighth entering Tuesday’s final round.
