Murrells Inlet downs Mullins, faces rematch with Florence

Murrells Inlet Post 178 scored an 11-3 victory over visiting Mullins on Thursday night, but the big game is set for Friday.

Post 178 improved to 3-1 in American Legion Baseball play as it prepares for a rematch with unbeaten rival Florence on Friday.

Following a string of rainouts, Murrells Inlet got back on the winning track by blowing out Mullins at St. James High’s Shark Park.

Murrells Inlet starting pitcher John Lauttenbach allowed only one run through six innings of work. Post 178′s Manny Berdayes had a big night at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Carl Buddin went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Hugh Benton went 2-for-3. Rodney Cross  had a double and stole three bases for Post 178.

Murrells Inlet suffered an 11-2 loss at Florence last week but this time it won’t have to make the one-hour bus trip for the rematch.

Post 178 will be without St. James star Preston Lane and North Myrtle Beach standout Billy Ferguson, who both pitch and play the field.

Lane and Ferguson are competing in the North-South All-Star Classic, which is being held on the Grand Strand this weekend.
