Post 178 defense falters in shutout loss to Georgetown

What began as a pitchers’ duel turned into a defensive debacle for Murrells Inlet Post 178 in Tuesday night’s 5-0 loss to Georgetown.

With former St. James star and current Florence/Darlington Tech pitcher Gunner Kines on the mound for Murrells Inlet, they battled Georgetown for five scoreless innings before unraveling in the sixth.

St. James’ Preston Lane took over the hill in the sixth and was victimized by several defensive mistakes to load the bases. Waccamaw High ‘s John Daniel Whitlock delivered the big blow for Georgetown with a bases-clearing triple.

Carlos Fernandez relieved Lane in the sixth and pitched the final 2 1/3 innings of shutout baseball.Kines scattered four hits while striking out six while Lane was the hard-luck loser.

Offensively, Murrells Inlet was led by Lane (2 for-4), Hugh Benton (2-for-4) and Logan Howard (2-for-3) but Georgetown was able to keep anyone from crossing home plate. Travis Shelly threw four shutout innings to get the win.
