Murrells Inlet Post 178 goes down swinging in AL playoffs

On the verge of being swept in the second round of the American Legion Baseball playoffs, Murrells Inlet Post 178 made a bold final stand before seeing its season come to a close.

Murrells Inlet suffered a heart-breaking 8-7 loss at West Columbia Post 79 on Thursday, giving the hosts a 3-1 edge in the best-of-five series.

But it didn’t come as easily as it appeared after the first half of the series. With West Columbia winning easily in the openers and holding a lead in Game 3, Murrells Inlet suddenly became a tough out.

Post 178 rallied for a 14-13 victory to extend the series, then appeared ready to level the series after strong pitching performances by starter Joey Toriano and reliever Casey Crooks.

But several critical errors in the field allowed West Columbia to close the door on the series and advance to the Lower State finals.
