NMB offense catches fire for playoff victory at O-W

nmbfoot-defenseThe North Myrtle Beach High football team set all kinds of records in Friday night’s first-round playoff victory at Orangeburg-Wilkinson.

The Chiefs (9-2) recorded the most wins in a season in school history and their first playoff victory since snapping a 22-game losing streak just last season by knocking off the top-seeded Bruins (9-2). But perhaps the biggest number of the night was 52, the number of points the Chiefs scored in the historic 52-35 win.

The Chiefs and Bruins entered the contest with two of the top defenses in the Lower State, and O-W hadn’t allowed more than 28 in their only previous loss of the season. North Myrtle Beach’s offense torched the Bruins, including 21 unanswered points in the second half.

“That’s one of the better teams we’ve played all year and our kids just came out with a lot of fight,” said NMB coach Perry Woolbright. “We really played hard in that second half.”

The Chiefs led 31-28 after a wild first half thanks to a last-second, 41-yard field goal by Christian Buis. But the Bruins continued to roll against the normally stubborn NMB defense and regained the lead on the first drive of the second half on a touchdown run by Tyshawn Butler.

But that was it for the O-W offense, as NMB took control from there on out. Delonzo Williams scored the go-ahead TD with a 12-yard TD run, then quarterback Kendrick Furness threw TD tosses to Kyle Cooper and Jordan Perry to put the game away.

“We knew we were going to have to throw the ball against their great defensive line,” Woolbright said. “Kendrick did a great job and his receivers did too. We weren’t able to run the ball but the offensive line did a great job of pass protection.”

Furness threw four touchdowns on the night, two to Cooper, who also threw a TD pass on a fake-fumble trick play in the first half. Colby Gore also scored two TDs, an interception return that opened the scoring and an 11-yarder from Furness that put NMB up 28-21 in the second quarter.

The Chiefs will travel to Strom Thurmond next week.
