Chants blast Rhode Island, host West Virginia today

ccubase-gkyoungCoastal Carolina scored two runs in the first inning and three in the second to claim a 6-2  victory over Rhode Island in game three of the Caravelle Resort Tournament, played at Pelicans Ballpark.

The event will feature four games on Saturday. Duke and Marshall begin the day at 10 am, followed by Coastal Carolina hosting West Virginia at 1:30 pm. The evening session has Rhode Island facing James Madison at 5 pm and the Chanticleers hosting Marshall at 8:30 pm.

The Chanticleer offense was led by Colin Hering, who was 3-for-5, while Connor Owings, Jake Kane, Zach Remillard and G.K. Young each added two hits. Kane and Young also each had two RBI.

After Chanticleer starter Ben Smith struck out the side in the top of the first, Coastal put two runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Owings lined a one-out triple and scored two batters later on Remillard’s RBI single. Young followed with a double to the right field corner, scoring Remillard from first.

Rhode Island tied the game in the top of the second. The Rams scored their first run without a hit as Chase Livingston and Chris Hess started the frame with back-to-back walks. A passed ball and wild pitch allowed Livingston to score. Andre Malone drew a third straight walk, advanced to second on a ground out and scored on Mike Scherburne’s single to center. Coastal regained the lead in the bottom of the second, scoring three times on two errors for a 5-2 lead. Nick Oberg started the home half by reaching on a two-base error and Owings was hit by a pitch. The two scored on Jake Kane’s double. Remillard reached on an error and scored on Young’s RBI Texas-league single. From that point, the teams traded zeroes until Coastal pushed across an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Kane singled and moved to second on a Young walk. Hering reached on an infield single and a throwing error on the play allowed Kane to provide the final 6-2 score. Smith (1-2) was credited with the win. The junior struck out nine in five innings, allowing three hits, two runs (one earned) and seven walks. Freshman Andrew Beckwith worked the final three innings to pick up his first collegiate save.

Rams’ starter Tyler Bowditch (0-1) took the loss, allowing seven hits and five runs (three earned) in two innings.
