Week 9 Previews & Picks: MB looks to wrap up region

mbfoot-arnoldrolloutMyrtle Beach can clinch the Region 7-3A title with a win at Georgetown on Friday night, but the Bulldogs could prove to be the biggest threat to the Seahawks unbeaten season.

No. 1-ranked Myrtle Beach has won 16 straight dating back to last season’s state championship run. There have been some close calls this season, including last week’s 38-31 win at St. James in which the Seahawks were guilty of letting off the gas early.

Georgetown (7-1, 2-1) can create some drama atop the region standings with an upset of the Seahawks (8-0 3-0). The Bulldogs welcome back leading rusher Michael Billings, who may be able to balance out the ground game after Myrtle Beach’s Brandon Sinclair ran for four scores last week.

But it’s the Seahawks’ passing game that will make the difference in this one. If quarterback Drayton Arnold and his band of receivers are in synch and the defense does its job, the Seahawks should clinch a No. 1 playoff seed on the road. … Myrtle Beach 35, Georgetown 20.

* St. James at North Myrtle Beach: The Sharks (2-6, 0-3) and Chiefs (2-6, 1-2) could have a pity party over the tough losses they have suffered this season, but there’s no time for that. Both need to win this one to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The Chiefs have worked overtime and double overtime the past two weeks, splitting those contests. The Sharks have made respectable showings against superior talent but have been unable to break through for a region win. Misery loves company, but the Chiefs will be celebrating in the end. … North Myrtle Beach 24, St. James 14.

* West Florence at Socastee: The Braves (6-2, 1-1) got punched in the mouth last week against Conway, which avenged its earlier loss to Socastee. Maybe that will finally wake-up the Braves, who at times seem to be sleep-walking through some of their wins. … Socastee 23, West Florence 17.

* Sumter at Carolina Forest: The Panthers’ (2-6, 0-2) loss last week’s to No. 2 South Florence defies all logic. Carolina Forest shocked the Bruins and the world by taking a 42-10 lead just seconds before the half, only to be outscored 45-7 the rest of the way. Let’s hope the hangover doesn’t continue against the Gamecocks. … Sumter 44, Carolina Forest 27.

* Conway at South Florence: It’s going to be tough for the Tigers (2-6, 1-1) to sneak up on the Bruins after last week’s close call against Carolina Forest, but Conway is a much improved team and could give South Florence some problems. Bruins QB Nick Jones is a points-producing machine. … South Florence 38, Conway 20.

* Holly Hill Academy at Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach: The Saints’ (1-7) schedule doesn’t get any easier this week, but they are getting better each week. … Holly Hill Academy 42, CAMB 14.
