4A Girls: MB sleepwalks to win; NMB, SJ drop openers

mbghoops-2dribFortunately for the No. 2-ranked Myrtle Beach High girls basketball team, there are no style points in the playoffs. The top-seeded Lady Seahawks (20-2) didn’t score many in Tuesday night’s 33-20 victory over visiting Dreher in the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Looking to make a repeat trip to the state championship game this season, Myrtle Beach didn’t get off to the best start to the postseason. The Lady Seahawks struggled on offense, scoring a season-low 33 points that is more than 20 points below their per-game average. Dreher led at halftime 12-11 and the two teams were tied midway through the third quarter.

But Myrtle Beach scored 14 unanswered points and held Dreher scoreless in the fourth until the final minute. Nia Sumpter led Myrtle Beach with a game-high 15 points and Kiana Adderton chipped in eight points.

The Lady Seahawks hope the scare will serve as a wake-up call when they host Darlington in the second round on Friday night.

* Orangeburg-Wilkinson 46, North Myrtle Beach 42: The Lady Chiefs saw their postseason hopes come to an end in heartbreaking fashion with a hard-fought first-round loss to the Lady Bruins.

* Lower Richland 48, St. James 22: The fourth-seeded Lady Sharks ran into a buzz saw in the first round against host Lower Richland, ending their season at 8-15.
