Week 8 Previews & Picks: Edwards caps wild week

confoot-4pinkTo say Conway High wide receiver Bryan Edwards has experienced a roller-coaster week would be a vast understatement. Down-right crazy is more like it.

It all started for the South Carolina commitment Monday with rumors that Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier was resigning at midseason, followed by confirmation of the huge curve ball to his college plans.

Edwards tweeted that he was weighing his options while the school tries to find Spurrier’s replacement, and ACC and SEC coaches are licking their chops to get a second shot at the 6-foot-4, 210-pound pass magnet.

Things took a turn for the better Wednesday when Edwards was invited to play in the US Army All-American Bowl, followed by Thursday’s announcement that he was one of five finalists for the S.C. Mr. Football Award. But Edwards’ best day of the week will likely come Friday, when he and the Tigers take on Socastee in a rematch from Week 2. Conway hung half a hundred on the Braves that night, and Edwards was just warming up. … Conway 42, Socastee 12.

* St. James at Myrtle Beach: It’s not an exaggeration to say the Seahawks saved their season in last Saturday’s 38-32 come-from-behind, double-overtime victory over Lake City. But it remains to be seen if the Seahawks’ explosion for 26 unanswered points will serve as the turning point to a so-so start to the season.

Myrtle Beach can’t assume it is off an running to another region title until its showdown with also-unbeaten Georgetown, not against this year’s school of Sharks. St. James is a close second to Carolina Forest for the most improved award this season, and last week’s waxing of Wilson showed the Sharks are more than capable of shocking the Seahawks. … Myrtle Beach 24, St. James 20.

* Carolina Forest at South Florence: The Panthers are for real and can establish themselves as a legitimate contender for the region title with a win over the Bruins. Dyverse Simmons is rolling up some serious acreage on offense, but it’s the Panthers’ defense that has been the biggest surprise. Look for them to shut down the struggling Bruins. … Carolina Forest 34, South Florence 17.

* Wilson at North Myrtle Beach: The Chiefs have to make a quick turnaround after Tuesday’s loss to Georgetown, having only 48 hours to prepare for the Tigers. But the Chiefs should be able to push through and stay in the thick of the region race. … North Myrtle Beach 27, Wilson 13.

Last week 4-1; Overall 29-12
