Bama rallies in second half to down Chants in opener

ccuhoops-bamaThe Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball team opened the 2016-17 season at Alabama and put forth a valiant effort before falling 70-53.

Colton Ray-St Cyr and Elijah Wilson were the only two Chants to reach double digits with Ray-St Cyr’s 13 points leading the way and Wilson scoring 12.

CCU (0-1) shot 24 percent in the second half yet only trailed the Crimson Tide 52-48 with less than six minutes left to go in the game.  The Chants had a chance to cut the lead even more, but a turnover turned into a quick three point basket and off went the home team.

Alabama (1-0) hit five consecutive shots, with three of those three point field goals and one old fashioned three point play and Alabama outscored CCU 18-5 for the final margin of victory.

CCU out rebounded the taller Tide 43-39, but Alabama’s length was a problem as they finished with eight blocked shots and were able to get to the free throw line for 26 attempts, hitting 18.  CCU only attempted 16 free throws and hit 10.

Corban Collins had 15 points and Riley Norris added 14 to lead Alabama.

Coastal will host their first home game of the season Monday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. when the College of Charleston comes to Conway.
