Hoops: MB sweeps past SJ; Conway, CF falter in region

mbhoops-2dribThe Myrtle Beach High boys basketball team captured its first region victory of the season Thursday night in blowout fashion over host St. James.

The Seahawks came out firing, scoring the game’s first 10 points, and they led by double-digits the rest of the way to level their Region 7-4A record at 1-1.

Myrtle Beach was led by Emory Knox’s game-high 19 points and Robert Swanson added 15.

The Sharks were led by Trey Myers with 15 points. They fell to 0-2 in league play.

* Sumter 53, Carolina Forest 52: The Panthers suffered a tough loss in Region 6-5A play, falling on the road to the Gamecocks by a single point. Sumter outscored Conway 18-10 to rally for the win.

The Panthers held a four-point lead with under 2 minutes remaining when Sumter came down and hit a huge trey to cut the lead to 1. The next Panthers possession was a costly turnover and Sumter capitalized taking the lead by 1. The Panthers put the ball in the post and Tariq Timmons scored the go ahead basket.

The Panthers came up with a big stop and were fouled with 19 seconds remaining. They only made 1 free throw, which left the door open for Sumter to hit a 3 with only 2 seconds left to win the game. Timmons scored 12 points and Richmond Collier and Damon McDowell tallied 14 apiece.

* West Florence 54, Conway 48: The No. 4-ranked Tigers suffered their first region loss and saw their 10-game winning streak snapped by the No. 2 Knights in a key 6-5A showdown.

* Socastee 53, South Florence 44: The Braves scored their first region win of the season against the Bruins.

GIRLS

* Myrtle Beach 59, St. James 20: The Lady Seahawks (11-2, 2-0 region) rolled to an easy victory over the Lady Sharks, including a 23-1 run in the third period that put the game on ice.

Myrtle Beach’s Kiana Adderton continued her hot streak with a game-high 19 points, and teammate Nia Sumpter tallied 15 points.
