5A Roundup: CF survives; Red Foxes roll past Tigers

cffoot-bealepitchCarolina Forest’s biggest win of the season might have coincided with the Panthers’ biggest loss of the year.

Carolina Forest scored a 14-13 victory over host Hoggard (NC) on Friday night to remain undefeated on the season, but the Panthers also lost standout running back Dyverse Simmons to an ankle injury in the first half. The Panthers (3-0) saw a two-touchdown lead nearly slip away in the second half as they dodged a late bullet to avoid a comeback bid by the Vikings (1-2).

Facing fourth-and-goal on the Carolina Forest 2 with 21 seconds remaining, Hoggard quarterback Josh Jones scored on a keeper to cut the deficit to a single points. But the Vikings misfired on the potential tying PAT to preserve the win for the Panthers.

Carolina Forest had trouble moving the ball for the first time this season, but quarterback Matt Beale hooked up with Ismael Garcia for an 85-yard touchdown pass to break the scoreless tie and give the Panthers a 7-0 halftime score. Beale ran one in from 3 yards out in the third period and Carolina Forest appeared to ready to pull away.

But the Vikings struck back quickly when Jones threw a TD pass to cut the deficit in half late in the third quarter. The Carolina Forest defense held firm until the final 2 minutes, when Jones connected on a long pass to set up firth-and-goal. The Panthers stopped the Vikings until fourth down, when Jones slipped around the corner to paydirt. But the celebration was shortlived when the extra point attempt was shanked. The Panthers recovered the onsides kick and ran out the clock.

The Panthers play their fourth consecutive road game next Friday against rival Myrtle Beach.

* Hartsville 62, Conway 28: The Tigers (2-2) defense got knocked out early and often by the Red Foxes’ wing-T attack as Hartsville sophomore running back Tiyon Evans rushed for six touchdowns, three of them in the first quarter. Evans ran for TDs the first three times he touched the ball and the Red Foxes led 28-7 at the end of the first quarter and 41-14 at halftime.

Conway tried to make it interesting in the second half, cutting the lead to 48-28 early in the fourth quarter. But the Red Foxes put the game a way to send the Tigers limping into their bye week. They face rival Myrtle Beach in the Battle for the Victory Bell on Sept. 23.
