5A Roundup: Tigers bomb Bulldogs; Braves on hold

confoot-13runConway High football fans were curious how the Tigers were going to replace all-state wide receiver Bryan Edwards, now a freshman at South Carolina. The answer – by committee.

Conway quarterback Peyton Derrick threw five touchdown passes to four different receivers – to lead the Tigers to a 42-19 victory over visiting Georgetown in the 2016 season opener.

Derrick, a senior commit to Appalachian State, took target practice against the Bulldogs’ defense, connecting with a stable of wideouts. He completed his first and last TD passes to senior Darren Stanley, who was expected to play a major role at receiver. His 38-yard grab opened the Tigers’ scoring, and a 30-yard hookup delivered the final blow.

But Conway showed depth at the position in the likes of senior Malachi Miller and juniors Pooh Brantley and Rakim Bellamy. After Georgetown tied it up on a short TD run by Tony Lara, Miller put the Tigers back on top on a 19-yard TD grab from Derrick, 14-7. Shortly before the half, Brantley caught a 24-yard TD from Derrick for a 21-7 halftime lead.

Georgetown made it interesting with a pair of second-half TD scores, but Derrick hit Bellamy from 20 yards out, and found Stanley for a second time. Tyreke Weaver scored on a short run late to put the final nail in the Bulldogs’ coffin.

The Tigers (1-0) play host to Wando next Friday.

* West Brunswick (NC) 19, Socastee 6 (postponed): Friday night’s opening kickoff was like deja vu for the Braves, who will have to return to Shallotte, NC, at 6 p.m. Saturday to complete the lightning-delayed game. It’s the second time in three years Socastee has had its season opener at West Brunswick rained out and require two days to finish.

This time the Braves find themselves in an considerably deficit against the Trojans, who scored three unaswered touchdowns to take a commanding lead with 4 minutes left in the second period.

Socastee took the opening drive for a touchdown, capped on a short TD run by Edward Tucker. But West Brunswick countered with a TD drive of its own and the Trojan defense seemed to solve the Braves’ offensive attack. Socastee hopes to get the offense rolling again when the two teams tee it up again Saturday.
