Athlete of Season: Nelson, Seahawks dominate voting

Myrtle Beach High didn’t have its best spring sports season. However, Seahawks virtually swept the Mammy’s Kitchen Athletes of the Spring Sports Season awards balloting.

Myrtle Beach had four graduating seniors rank in the top five of the voting, with Seahawks baseball standout Jesse Nelson winning the award with more than 9,000 of the 17,000 votes cast.

Nelson, an All-Region 7-3A triple threat pitcher and utilityman who helped the Seahawks to a playoff berth from the plate, mound and field. He will play his college ball at Florence-Darlington Tech before transferring to a larger school.

Only Carolina Forest distance runner Lisa Pieterse broke up the Myrtle Beach sweep of the top five spots, just as she broke the tape in the Class 4A Girls 3200 meters to capture the state championship as a sophomore. She received more than 4,300 votes.

Pieterse was followed by a trifecta of college-bound Seahawks – Region 7-3A Boys Soccer Player of the Year and Presbyterian commit Mason Lewis, All-Region 7-3A baseball player and Citadel-bound Wilson Wicker, and track standout Jack Montgomery, the Class 3A Lower State champion and State runner-up hurdler who will attend Fairmont State for football.

St. James pitcher and College of Charleston-bound blue-chipper Anders DeShields, who led the Sharks to the Lower State playoffs and their sixth straight region title, was sixth, followed by sophomore soccer player Keaton Zimmer, who helped the St. James boys to a playoff berth and state ranking.

Conway diamond standouts Sydny Howell and Jordan Gore were next on the list. Howell, a transfer from Aynor, led the Lady Tigers to their first playoff berth in five years as a pitcher and outfielder, as did the South Carolina-bound Gore for the Tigers.

A pair of Carolina Forest female athletes rounded out the list. Lady Panthers softball standout Cheyenne Mackenna and soccer star Erica Gazzani helped their respective teams to the playoffs.
