Athlete of Season: Another title for Sharks’ Mewhorter

aos-mewhorterOnly one Grand Strand athlete walked off the winter sports courts and mats with a state championship this year, and he also happens to be the Mammy’s Kitchen Athlete of the Season.

St. James wrestler Michael Mewhorter captured the Class 3A state title in the 145-pound division, capping a 42-1 senior season and his last chance to earn a ring. He also was voted the top winter athlete by receiving more than 12,000 of the total 60,000 cast.

Mewhorter was followed by several other local athletes who made a run at state championships. Runner-up Carolina Forest wrestler PJ Wunderlich advanced to the Class 4A state championships. Class 3A state qualifier Brandon Reisin gave wrestlers three of the top-five spots.

A close race for third saw basketballers Kiana Adderton of Myrtle Beach edge Carolina Forest’s Damon McDowell. Adderton helped the Lady Seahawks reach the 3A state title game in a close loss to Dreher, while McDowell led the Panthers to their deeprest playoff run in school history before falling in the third round. Sixth-place finisher Michael Green helped carry the young Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach boys basketball team to the SCISA state semifinals.

Other candidates, in order of votes received, saw a Carolina Forest trio – wrestler Christian Coppola and girls basketball players Alexis Tomlin and Cheynne Pyles. Myrtle Beach girls basketball players Nia Sumpter and Keocia Walker, and Christian Academy senior Bernard Jones rounded out the list.

Grand Strand Sports Report begins its Athletes of the Week spring series this week so be sure to vote for your favorite players.
