Athlete of the Week: Davis leading MB as a freshman

mbvolley-davisIt’s not often that a team looks to a ninth-grader for leadership, especially one with a season as successful as the Myrtle Beach High volleyball team. But then again, it’s not often that a player like freshman Gracie Davis comes along.

Davis was named the Region 7-3A Player of the Year for the second straight season after leading the Lady Seahawks to an undefeated region campaign and a one-loss regular season and a No. 1 seed the playoffs.

Her combination of talent and experience are one of the reasons the Lady Seahawks are flying high headed into Tuesday’s second round showdown against visiting Orangeburg-Wilkinson.

“It makes me feel honored and privileged to have been a part of such a successful season,” recalled Davis, who was named the Mammy’s Kitchen Athlete of the Week. “I am excited to take on this new challenge as a freshman and to help the team succeed in any way I can.”

Despite her youth, Davis knows her responsibility on this year’s squad and does not take any game for granted as she eludes the spotlight and focuses on the task at hand. Her strategy and mindset while out on the court did not come over night as she has spent countless hours since the early age of 9 working on her game.

“I practice every day with the goal to improve at a constant rate. I think consistency is the key to success.” said Davis, who honed her skills through the Grand Strand Juniors program before starring for Myrtle Beach as a seventh-grader. “I always try to stay positive even if we aren’t playing well.”

This leadership mentality has allowed her to be a true team player for the Lady Seahawks as Davis always puts her team before anything while out on the court. “I think our team plays well together because we connect on a personal level and know each others’ strengths and weaknesses,” she said.

And that togetherness could be just what they need to make a deep run in the playoffs in hopes of reaching the one place all athletes aspire to go – a state championship.

“I think we have a pretty good chance at making it to states,” Davis said. “I think it would be a great opportunity to show that our hard work all season has paid off.”
