Athlete of the Week: Guest lifts Braves to new heights

socvolley-guestserveSocastee High volleyball standout Mary D. Guest says it seems like yesterday that she and her fellow seniors first took the court, but that was six years ago. But she and the Lady Braves are fully aware that they only have a few more tomorrows together as teammates.

Guest was voted the Mammy’s Kitchen Athlete of the Week after leading Socastee to sole possession of the Region 6-4A championship, snapping Carolina Forest’s six-year stranglehold on the title. After sharing the crown in 2014, Guest and her teammates were determined to win it outright this season.

“We were all looking forward to reaching that goal and having the region title to ourselves,” recalled Guest, who helped Socastee sweep the season series with the Lady Panthers. “It was a big accomplishment for the whole team, but especially for the seniors since this was our last chance.”

Guest, Dale Rogers, Katelynn Hine are among the seniors who have helped build the Lady Braves into a regional power over the past six seasons. Now with their regular-season goal pout of the way, they have a couple of weeks left to see exactly how far they can take the program in the postseason.

“I think we have a good chance of going pretty far,”Guest said. “The group of girls on this team right now have played together for quite a while, and the bond between the whole team is really close, It’s really nice to be able to have one last year with the same people I’ve been playing with since I was 12, and to see how far we’ve come.”

The results are telling. Socastee is 16-1 so far on the season and are two wins away from completing a clean sweep of the region. The Lady Braves close out the regular season Monday in what is sure to be an emotional Senior Day, but Guest and her classmates hope it is far from their final game at The Wave.

“The way the brackets line up, as long as we win we will play at home through the playoffs,” Guest said. “That will be great because there’s a lot of excitement with the students and fans. I believe, as tight as this team is, we can make a run at it. It will be fun seeing how far we can go.”

Especially given how far they have already come.
