Athlete of the Year: MB golf loses rising star in Bogache

Pendleton Bogache has a bright future on and off the golf course – just not for Myrtle Beach High.

The Mammy’s Kitchen Athlete of the Year for girls golf had a superb sophomore season for the Lady Seahawks, leading them to the Region VIII-AAA championship.

But the rising junior and A-student is transferring to Episcopal Academy in Alexandria, Virginia to focus on academics as much as the little white ball, which she will be chasing with a new set of teammates.

“I’m going to miss them and my coach (Brian Kiper),” said Bogache, who carded a 39.6 average over nine holes last season to lead the Lady Seahawks. “We made some great memories.”

Bogache’s earliest childhood memories involve a golf club, picking up the sticks for the first time at the age of 6. Instructors at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club instantly recognized she had something special.

“My dad got me into playing and we were told I had a natural talent for golf,” she said. “I just got better through practice. I love the game, but I also have a strong competitive side.”

Bogache’s drive and drives quickly showed when the St. Andrews Academy freshman started playing for the Lady Seahawks. She was an instant contributor and, despite her youth, a leader by example.

“Pendleton is a tireless worker who has played a lot of golf and taken many lessons for someone her age,” Kiper said. “She is also a great teammate … even on days when she doesn’t play her best.”

Such was the case in last fall’s Region VIII-AAA tournament, when Bogache settled for a disappointing third-place finish as the favorite but took more pride in helping her team win the title. She settled for a 16th-place showing in the state tournament.

“I was disappointed individually because I didn’t play well at the region tournament and finished third, but we were able to win as a team and do well at the state so that was the most important thing to me.”

Now Bogache is headed for bigger and better things as she pursues her quest for a college scholarship and education. She is spending a month this summer as golf school in Texas before heading to Virginia.

“I want to play college golf, but the main thing is to get an education,” she said. “I’m not sure about playing professionally, but the game will always be a big part of my life.”

Either way, she’s on course for a bright future.
