Athlete of Week: Gordon has 100 scores, one goal

mbgsoc-4aowMyrtle Beach junior Tristan Gordon scored the 100th goal of her high school career earlier this week, but she is focused on only one goal – helping the Lady Seahawks keep their playoff hopes alive.

Gordon leads the Lady Seahawks to the Class 4A Lower State semifinals Friday against defending state champion Chapin. After surpassing a personal milestone, she and the Lady Seahawks hope to reach the ultimate team goal of a state title.

“That has always been our team goal,” said Gordon, who was voted the Mammy’s Kitchen Athlete of the Week after lifting the Lady Seahawks to the Region 7-4A title. “But for now we are just taking it one game at a time.”

So far so good as Myrtle Beach rolled through the first two rounds of the playoffs, thanks to five goals by Gordon. She recorded a hat trick just 19 minutes into Myrtle Beach’s first-round win over Orangeburg-Wilkinson before taking the rest of the night off.

Gordon added two more in Wednesday’s 3-1 victory over Beaufort to give her 103 goals for her career. The SCHSL’s “Palmetto’s Finest” record book lists only seven players to surpass the triple-digit plateau – and she is only a junior.

“I have always set high goals,” Gordon said of the 100-goal feat. “It hasn’t sunk in yet.”

Gordon has a legit shot to crack the top four, although the state record of 202 may be out of reach. However, Gordon is on pace to break Myrtle Beach coach and former North Myrtle Beach standout and Coastal Carolina Hall-of-Famer Blair Mueller’s Horry County mark of 134.

“We’ve never talked about it,” Gordon said.

Gordon is a bit of a reluctant hero, shying away from the spotlight despite the fact that her game thrusts her into it. The soft-spoken star uses her blazing speed and surprisingly powerful foot to hammer home opportunities set up for her by the Lady Seahawks.

“My teammates have helped me a lot along the way and it never would have been possible without them,” Gordon said. “It was really cool that my 100th goal came on an assist from a teammate of a long time, Josie Posma.”

Always deflecting credit to her teammates, Gordon is glad the 100-goal quest is over so she and the Lady Seahawks can focus on bigger targets. After reaching the Lower State Final last year, Myrtle Beach stands ready to take the next step.

“I think we are feeling pretty positive after our last few games and wins,” Gordon said. “I think we just need to keep playing as a team to win against Chapin.”
