Athlete of Week: Lang has Saints carrying on tradition

cambhoops-0When six seniors graduated from the Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach SCISA Class A boys’ state championship team last year, Josh Lang was left behind the help continue the program’s success.

The loss of a class that had been a part of multiple state titles, coupled with the Saints’ move up from Class A to Class 2A this season, had many wondering if this year’s young group was capable of keeping up the winning tradition.

But midway through the 2014-15 campaign, the senior Lang and a game group of youngsters who have patiently waited their turns to contribute have the Saints playing like they haven’t missed a beat.

“We have a lot of young kids but they have really stepped up,” said Lang, who was voted the Mammy’s Kitchen Athlete of the Week after leading the Saints to a 12-4 start. “We have a lot of talent on this team and we are developing our chemistry and trying to put it all together.”

The Saints seemed to do just that in last week’s 59-58 upset win over public-school rival St. James, which came into the contest with an eight-game winning streak. Lang scored 10 points and saw his young teammates grow up around him to take down the Sharks.

“We played really well defensively and a lot of guys stepped up and made plays when the game was on the line,” said Lang, who averages 11.8 points and 4.6 rebounds per game this season. “I think that was the game when we really came together and saw how good we could be.”

The Saints have already met the standard for “good,” but the goal at CAMB has been set by the past classes that have hanged state championship banners in the new gym. Lang already has a pair of state titles under his belt but would love to leave with a third.

“That’s a lot of pressure, but that’s the level that’s expected of us,” Lang said. “Maybe it’s a good thing that we have so many young guys because we’re not feeling that pressure. We’re just trying to play the best we can and see how far we can go.”

But Lang knows his lofty goal, and what it takes to get there. “Winning state for a third time would be real nice,” he said, “But we’ve got to keep working hard and coming together as a team, and I believe we will.”
