Bagwell Ks 11 as Lady Chants salvage split with Campbell

Playing in their final Big South Conference road series the Coastal Carolina softball team split with Campbell on Friday.

The Fighting Camels took the first game 3-2, while the Chanticleers came from behind to win the second game 2-1 in eight innings. Ashley Bagwell recorded a season high 11 strikeouts in the win over Campbell.

The Chanticleers and the Fighting Camels met for the first time since 2007. Coastal is 33-16 on the season and 10-7 in conference play following the doubleheader.

Campbell took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a home run by Taylor McGee to left center field with two strikes.

Kory Hayden recorded her 12th home run of the season, hitting the ball out of center field in the fourth inning to tie the game at one apiece. Hayden is tied for seventh on Coastal Carolina’s single season records list for home runs.

Camise Patterson put the Fighting Camels back ahead by one run in the bottom of the fourth, as she scored on an error by Coastal. Maggie Christopher extended Campbell ’s lead to two on Sarah Forgacs’ single up the middle.

The Chanticleers made it a 3-2 game in the sixth inning, as Sarah Maples crossed home on Cacia Pierre’s double down the left field line.

During the top of the seventh inning Beth Kassuhn hit a single to center field with one out. Campbell closed out the game with a double play to take the game 3-2.

Hayden finished the game with one hit, one RBI and one run in three at bats, along with six assists. Pierre had one hit and one RBI in two at bats and was walked once. Sara Rasley ended the game with eight putouts, while Chelsea Pineda had seven putouts.

Kiana Quolas pitched six innings in which she tallied six strikeouts and gave up five hits, while walking three in 25 batters faced.

Olivia Scarborough pitched a complete game for Campbell , striking out four, giving up three hits and walking four in 27 batters faced.

During the second game the Chanticleers struggled during the bottom of the first inning on defense, as the Fighting Camels went ahead 1-0 with Sarah Forgacs scoring for the Camels.

Courtney Howell tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth when she advanced home on a throwing error by Campbell during Pierre ’s at bat.

The game went into extra innings after neither team was able to pick up a run. Coastal had a chance to score in the seventh with the bases loaded, but the Fighting Camels defense picked up the three outs to take it to the bottom of the inning.

In the eighth inning Pineda hit a double to left field. Nicole Saggiomo pinch ran for Pineda and advanced home following two wild pitched by Julia Callicutt.

The Chanticleers held their ground during the bottom of the eighth, as Campbell recorded only one hit, which was a single to left field.

Hayden finished the game with two hits in three bats and she was walked once. Hayden and Jessie Winans both recorded with three assists. Pineda and Kassuhn both had one hit in four at bats, while Pineda also tallied a team high 13 putouts.

Bagwell pitched a complete game, striking out a season high 11 batters, as she did not give up a walk on the night, while Campbell posted nine hits. On the season Bagwell has a 10-7 record from the rubber.

Julia Callicutt took the loss for Campbell in the circle after pitching 7.1 innings, striking out three, walking six and giving up four hits.

Coastal returns to action on Saturday, April 21 to close out the series against Campbell .  The final game of the series is set for 2 p.m. at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
