Bama leaps LSU in final polls; USC ninth, Tigers fall to 22nd

As expected, Alabama leapfrogged LSU in both polls to claim the college football national championship following Monday night’s 21-0 shutout victory in the BCS title game.

The Crimson Tide (13-1) was an overwhelming choice for the top slot in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls after dominating Louisiana State from start to finish.

Some AP voters had suggested that a narrow victory might lead them to select LSU (13-1), which won a regular-season matchup at Alabama 9-6. Instead, the Crimson Tide received 55 of 60 first-place votes after holding the Tigers to 92 yards of total offense.

LSU got one first-place vote in finishing at No. 2 while third-ranked Oklahoma State (12-1) claimed the remaining four first-place votes. Alabama got all 59 first-place votes in the coaches poll, as mandated by the BCS system.

Rose Bowl champion Oregon finished fourth and Arkansas climbed to fifth in the final AP poll, giving the SEC three teams in the Top 5. Rounding out the top 10 were Southern California, Stanford, Boise State, South Carolina and Wisconsin, giving the SEC four teams in the final Top 10. The Gamecocks (11-2) are No. 8 in the coaches poll.

Meanwhile, Clemson took one of the biggest tumbles in both polls, dropping to No. 22 after being blown out by West Virginia 70-33 in the Orange Bowl. The Tigers (10-4) climbed as high as No. 5 in the BCS this season before a cold finish dropped them almost out of the poll all together.
