Baseball America, Carolina League recognize Pelicans

pel-gallohomerAs part of their annual prospect review, Baseball America ranked the top 20 prospects in the Carolina League for the 2014 season, and the Pelicans had a league-best eight players on the list, including the top player, third baseman Joey Gallo, and the second-ranked prospect, catcher Jorge Alfaro.

Also on the list was right-handed pitcher Alex “Chi Chi” Gonzalez (10), outfielder Nick Williams (11), outfielder Lewis Brinson (15), left-handed pitcher Andrew Faulkner (17), right-handed pitcher Jose Leclerc (19), and left-handed pitcher Alexander Claudio (20).

Of the eight players, only Leclerc spent all season with the Pelicans, and only Leclerc and Brinson finished the year with the Birds. Gallo, Alfaro, Gonzalez, Williams, and Faulkner finished the campaign in Double-A with the Frisco RoughRiders.

Claudio finished the season in Arlington in the big leagues with the Texas Rangers. The changeup specialist posted a 2.52 ERA with no record in 15 Major League outings, striking out 14 and walking only four.

Pelicans honored by Carolina League

The Carolina League announced its first iteration of the league’s Annual Awards on Friday, and the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, took home three of the four honors. The club won the Complete Franchise Award and the Marketing and Promotional Award. Pelicans Senior Director of Community Development Jen Borowski was named the Female Executive of the Year.

The League awards the Complete Franchise Award to a “complete” baseball franchise that has demonstrated franchise stability and significant contributions to its community and the League. As the winner from the Carolina League, the Pelicans are now nominated for the John H. Johnson President’s Award, which is presented at the Winter Meetings.

The Pelicans reached franchise-highs in ticket sales, online ticket sales, per game attendance and sellouts. For the second straight season, the club was named a top 25 Stadium Experience by Stadium Journey–ahead of Bristol Motor Speedway, Churchill Downs, AT&T Park (San Francisco Giants), and AT&T Stadium (Dallas Cowboys). The same publication has awarded the TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark the top stadium experience in the eight-team Carolina League for four straight years as well.
