Baseball Playoffs: Sharks, Chiefs win district debuts

sjbase-lakewoodThe top-seeded St. James High baseball team took the first step toward winning the Class 3A District 7 tournament on Friday by defeating visiting Lakewood 3-1.

The Sharks (18-7) broke open a scoreless tie in the third on an RBI by Liam Bloom, and Jordan Fields drove in the eventual game-winners in the fourth for a 3-0 lead.

St. James starter Anthony Beck did the rest, scattering six hits over seven innings and striking out four in the complete-game victory. Lakewood scored its lone run in the fifth but the Sharks slammed the door to advance to the winner’s bracket. They play host to Aiken on Monday.

* Darlington 5, Myrtle Beach 4: The third-seeded Seahawks lost a heartbreaker to the second-seeded Falcons, blowing a 4-0 lead before falling in the eighth in the first round of the Class 3A District 5 tournament.

Myrtle Beach’s Cameron Bodge pitched five shutout innings of one-hit baseball and carried a 4-0 lead into the sixth when Darlington exploded for four runs to send the game into extras. Myrtle Beach’s Jack Dixon came on in relief and Darlington scored the game-winning run in the eighth to complete the comeback win.

Myrtle Beach will travel to top-seeded Gilbert on Monday in an elimination game.

* North Myrtle Beach 14, Marlboro County 2: The Chiefs needed only five innings to score a TKO over the visiting Bulldogs in the Class 3A District 8 opener.

North Myrtle Beach’s Donald Hansis went 4-for-4 with five RBI and a homer, and Dalton Simpson pitched five innings and struck out four en route to the mercy rule win.

The Chiefs will travel to top-seeded Berkeley on Monday in a winners’ bracket showdown with the Stags.
