Baseball: Seahawks score one-run win over Socastee

mbbase-bodgepitchThe season may young but the Myrtle Beach High baseball team is already showing a knack for clutch performances. Such was the case again with Wednesday night’s 2-1 road victory over rival Socastee.

After scoring a pair of one-run wins over Aynor and Cardinal Newman over the weekend in the Baseball at the Beach tournament, the tested Seahawks squeaked out another one against the Braves with a last-inning surge.

Tied at 1-all in the top of the seventh, Jackson Thomas drove home the game-winning run as starter Cameron Bodge came in to close out the complete-game two-hitter. He struck out eight batters and walked only one for the win.

Myrtle Beach’s Luke Edwards had a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate, and Jackson’s two hits accounted for both of the Seahawks’ two RBIs. The latter spoiled an otherwise solid pitching effort by Wesley Lane, Hunter Illing and Fox Wagner.

The Braves return to action Thursday at St. James. The Seahawks travel to Conway on Thursday.

* Waccamaw 1, St. James 0: The Sharks came out on the short end of an intense pitchers’ dual that saw only six hits in the entire game.

Waccamaw’s Grant Blaylock drove in the game’s lone run in the sixth inning to break a scoreless deadlock, and pitcher Jaret Montenery closed out a complete-game win. He struck out nine Sharks and allowed only two hits.

St. James got a solid outing from starter Anthony Peck and relievers Maddy Hammons and Nick Bray but couldn’t get enough offensive support to let the combined four-hitter hold up.

The Sharks play host to rival Socastee on Thursday.
