Baseball: Sharks, Seahawks score big tournament wins

sjbase-5tagThe St. James High baseball team used a five-run fifth inning to score a 10-1 victory over Pelion in the second round of the Coastal Invitational Baseball Tournament.

The Sharks bounced back from an opening-round loss with an impressive complete-game performance from starting pitcher Tyler String. He scattered five hits over seven innings and struck out three with only one walk.

St. James also got a big day at the plate from Trystan Freeman (4-for-4, 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored) and Cameron Dean (2-for-4, 2 RBIs, 1 run scored).

* Myrtle Beach 9, Aynor 8: The Seahawks won in dramatic fashion over the defending Class A state champion Blue Jackets in the second day of the Baseball at the Beach tournament.

Myrtle Beach’s Jayce Allen delivered a walk-off win with the game-winning hit as the Seahawks bounced back from a one-run loss to Cardinal Newman in the opener.

* North Myrtle Beach 5, West Brunwick (NC) 0: The Chiefs defeated their state border rivals with a four-hit shutout of the Trojans.

NMB starter Dalton Simpson earned the win, allowing two hits and no runs in four innings while striking out seven. Reliever Matt McKewan finished the final two innings.

The Chiefs tallied nine hits, led by Craig Matta and Cole Gasque with two apiece.
